In 1867, Adrien Céleste Pillon — a young French clergyman — opened a silversmith's workshop in the small village of Ercuis in the Oise region north of Paris, producing liturgical silver of exceptional quality. By 1880, the house had been acquired by engineer Léon Durand, who redirected its mastery toward the tables of embassies, royal households, and luxury hotels, establishing the standard that would endure for more than a century and a half. Ercuis went on to equip the SS Normandie, the SS France, and the Venice Simplon Orient-Express — becoming the definitive expression of French silver art de vivre in the most demanding hospitality contexts of the twentieth century. Each piece of Ercuis flatware passes through as many as forty-five manual steps — from stamping and smoothing to engraving and polishing — with silverplating applied at 63 microns, nearly double the industry standard, with reinforced deposits on the highest-wear contact points. In 1978, Ercuis joined the Comité Colbert, the organization uniting France's greatest luxury houses, and today operates alongside Raynaud as part of the Arcturus Group alongside Sambonet and Rosenthal.
